An AI service returns text, so the automation marks the step successful and passes it to the next system. But the answer ends halfway through a sentence or a structured record is incomplete. Receiving some output is not enough evidence that the business task finished.

Before connecting generated results to customer messages or record updates, define what counts as a complete response. Keep incomplete output separate from approved business data and make the exception visible to someone responsible for recovery.

Inspect completion information as well as text

Microsoft’s Azure chat completion guidance documents finish reasons. For that API, length indicates incomplete model output caused by the completion-token setting or token limit; content_filter and tool_calls mean different things. In a stream, the finish reason remains null until the final chunk.

The exact fields differ across APIs. Ask the developer to handle the chosen provider’s documented final status, including transport failures and interrupted streams. Do not use the presence of a text fragment, a successful connection or an attractive UI animation as a substitute.

Define the downstream boundary

Consider a proposed assistant that drafts a service summary for a coordinator. A partial draft can be saved as incomplete for review. It should not be labelled as approved and sent automatically to a customer. If the same workflow creates a structured task record, missing required information should block that write until the validation and approval conditions are met.

ITZ’s business workflow automation service can help define these completion boundaries. Request an AI workflow completion review with the generated output type, downstream action and current exception process.

Use separate checks for completion and correctness

  • Transport: did the client receive the provider’s final response, rather than a disconnected stream?
  • Generation: does the documented completion status permit the intended next step?
  • Structure: can the result be parsed and does it contain the required fields?
  • Business meaning: are values plausible and supported by the authorised source information?
  • Permission: is the next action allowed, and has any required human approval occurred?

A normally finished response can still be wrong. A valid data structure can still contain unsupported values. Use the AI answer evaluation guide for quality testing and keep it distinct from this incomplete-output check.

Plan bounded recovery

If output is cut short, preserve a safe incident reference and route the attempt to a controlled retry or human review. The technical owner may need to reduce unnecessary input, narrow the requested task or adjust the supported output budget within agreed cost and latency limits. Repeatedly asking the model to continue is not a complete recovery design.

Decide how many attempts are permitted and what stops them. Do not repeat a downstream business action just because generation is retried. Record whether the action was never attempted, failed or has an uncertain result before deciding how to recover.

The job completion monitoring guide supports evidence of the final business outcome. If source documents can influence actions, retain the prompt-injection and action-boundary controls during recovery.

Test failures deliberately in a safe environment

  1. Use harmless sample input that produces a normal complete result and verify the intended review path.
  2. Configure an authorised test to exhaust the supported output budget and confirm that incomplete output is held.
  3. Simulate an interrupted stream or provider failure without performing a live business action.
  4. Test malformed and semantically incomplete data even when the generation status appears normal.
  5. Verify retry limits, staff notification and the absence of duplicate downstream changes.

Retain the test outcome and recovery owner. Avoid logging confidential prompts or full generated documents unnecessarily; the support record should contain only the evidence needed under the organisation’s approved handling process.
